The Nerd Patrol Laptop Guide

With the holidays here, consumers are inundated with choices when it comes to shopping for a new laptop. The purpose of this article is to help inform you of the perils you will face while choosing your new machine.

Keep in mind always that you get what you pay for. This is especially true for laptops. Machines geared for the consumer are usually configured with the minimal specs and a bunch of useless bells and whistles.

We know that it may be difficult in this economic climate, but one should really not make a decision based on a price point. When you factor in all the extra costs of upgrading the trial software (to make the bells and whistles toot and ring), and the inevitable repair costs associated with sub-par parts, you end up being nickel and dimed to death and are left with a very sour after-taste from the seemingly sweet deal.

If you are buying for a younger person, they are usually less concerned with longevity and want the flashiest and coolest looking units. Of course, they aren't usually the ones footing the bill, and besides, when have kids really ever known what they wanted?

So what does this mean for the prospective laptop buyer?

Look for machines labeled as business or gaming machines. These usually have higher spec components and a better warranty.

Speaking of warranties, ALWAYS buy a warranty. This is a must. Things happen to laptops, it is unavoidable, and considering the cost of repair or replacement, they usually pay for themselves.

So to recap, avoid the shiny, new fangled doo-dad ridden consumer models you see for low dollar amounts at your favorite electronics stores. They operate on the PT Barnum mentality of: "There's a sucker born every minute.” We love fixing them, but we know how frustrating it is to have to fix or replace a machine that is less than a year old. Buy a warranty; even though it raises the price by 30%, it will pay off.

Oh, and by the way, we sell Lenovo brand business class laptops bundled with a 3 year warranty. Be sure to ask for a demo.
